Sedation Dentistry in Lincoln, Nebraska

There is a surprisingly large number of people who either avoid visiting a dentist due to anxiety or fear of pain. However, advances in medicine have actually brought tremendous strides towards enhancing patient comfort and improving the overall experience of receiving dental treatment. At Capital Dental, we want to prove to you that receiving dental treatment does not have to be a painful ordeal.

In dentistry, sedation refers to medicine that is designed to make the experience more comfortable. This is usually accomplished by reducing the physical pain associated with treatment. However, sedation can also be used to reduce a patient’s anxiety and help them feel more relaxed while dental work is being completed. This is particularly useful for patients who experience unusually high levels of fear or anxiety. Not only will this make a patient’s visit more pleasant, but it will also help our experts perform their duties more effectively. It is much easier for our dentists to work when a patient is calm and relaxed.

We offer sedation options for local anesthesia and IV sedation. Our experts have a strong understanding of which sedation option is best for any given treatment.

When is sedation used?

Sedation is most commonly used during more extensive and involved dental procedures and oral surgeries. Sedation may also be provided if a patient is experiencing unusually high levels of fear or anxiety, and they need the medicine to remain comfortable and calm during treatment.

What is local anesthesia?

Local anesthesia is numbing medicine given by injection at the site of dental work. This medicine will make the patient less likely to notice the physical sensations associated with dental treatment. One important thing to note about local anesthesia is that it has no effect on a patient’s mental awareness; however, some patients report that receiving a local anesthetic provides them with some comfort in simply knowing that they are less likely to experience pain or discomfort during treatment.

What is IV sedation?

This medicine, provided through an IV, is great for managing both pain and anxiety. An advantage of IV sedation is that the medicine takes effect very quickly and also wears off in a timely manner. Since the medicine is strong, the patient will need to arrange for another party to take them home after receiving IV sedation. This is the sedation method used for most oral surgeries offered at Capital Dental.

I have always loved the care I received from Capital Dental. I attribute the the fact that I have a healthy and bright smile to the high level of care I've received over the years. I was greeted by an enthusiastic and positive staff when I got there and promptly got in at the scheduled time. Alyssa was fantastic as a dental tech and did a very professional job of explaining everything she was going to do as I was there for one of my twice annual check up and cleaning. I look forward to continuing my relationship with this office and I will highly recommend Capital Dental to family and friends.

All the staff were kind and understanding. They made me feel comfortable. This was the first time the hygienist hasn’t hurt me with the scraping tool. The hygienist and doctor were thorough in their explanations and wanted to help me. All around a great experience.
